I met Cal Hobson yesterday at a luncheon/fundraiser here in Tulsa.
I had seen him a month or so ago at a campaign forum for Democratic Lt. Governor hopefuls in the Aaronson Auditorium at the Central Library. The impression Cal made on me that night was that he was on top of the issues, wasn’t afraid of the Oklahoma Axis of Evil (Hiett & Pruitt) and refused to attack a fellow Democratic candidate.
Yesterday, in a casual setting, Cal made his case more convincingly. He talked about the advances in education made under his stewardship in the Senate; how he helped Oklahoma achieve a nationally acclaimed Early Childhood Development program after the Keating crew called teachers “slugs.” He cited the creation of OHLAP, the program that helps Oklahomans attend college if they keep their grade point above 2.5 and stay out of trouble. A family can qualify for OHLAP now, with a ceiling of $70,000 per year in earnings. The lottery is a huge success for funding education….so much so that the Republicans want to cut it’s funding from general revenue. And of course, teacher pay raises; which the Republicans passed but in a compromise with the Governor, failed to fully fund.
Hobson cited his credentials on healthcare and other issues, too.
The thing that impressed me most is his ability to contrast his progressive record and agenda versus the performance and promises of the “Pay for Play” Republican opponents. I’m convinced Cal Hobson can win “smash mouth” politics with the likes of either Hiett or Pruitt and urge you to vote for Cal.
