Recent news reports claim that neither Gov. Brad Henry nor Atty. General Drew Edmondson are interested in running against Sen. Jim Inhofe, who’s term expires in 2008. I wouldn’t put a whole lot of faith in the longevity of these positions, and here’s why.
I don’t know how it will effect Oklahoma but there are twenty-two Republican senators up for re-election in 2008 versus only twelve Democrats. Thus the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) won’t have to spread its money around as widely as its Republican conterpart. In the recent campaign, the DSCC showed remarkable prowess in raising and allocating money. Henry has accumulated a war chest of almost $4.5 million and has $1.2 million left over from last month’s election. This show Henry can raise serious money.
Inhofe will be a tough opponent. He’s built up a lot of good will doing favors and interceding for constituents. There is a definite cadre of support for his views here in Oklahoma. He too, has a war chest of $1+ million and can raise huge sums from the petro-chemical industry.
Still, it’s too early to count on Henry, and to a lesser degree, Edmondson to sit out that race.
