Dear Representative Kern,
Sally, Sally, Sally. We need to talk. What are we going to do with you? I just don’t know where to start this time. But as your friend, I feel there are some things I should tell you about that speech of yours.
First, you say that “homosexuality has deadly consequences for those people involved in it-they have more suicides; they’re more discouraged, there’s more illness, their life-spans are shorter.” I’m not sure where you got this information, Sally, but I am assuming you got it from the discredited Doctors James and Kirk (not the Growing Pains one) Cameron of the Family Research Institute. One of their most famous “studies” is “Federal Distortion of Homosexual Footprint (Ignoring Gay Death?),” in which they use obituaries in homosexual newsletters to “prove” that homosexuals live about 20 years less than heterosexuals on average. Sorry, Sally, but this isn’t what you call “research.” And what if you were right? Why would you say hateful things about one group of people just because they die sooner than other groups?
Speaking to your “more illness” charge, Sally, I assume you’re talking about AIDS. But you’re wrong here, too. Granted, homosexual men have a higher rate of AIDS than any other group. This is because anal sex is the surest way to spread AIDS. But I’ve got news for you, Sally: heterosexuals engage in anal sex, too, and AIDS is spread at about the same rate as with homosexuals. So, your problem here is not with homosexuals, but with people who engage in anal sex. And here’s something else you should know: Oral-vaginal sex is the least risky form of sex in terms of AIDS transmission. So if the spread of AIDS is what is bothering you, you think that we should all be lesbians, right?
About the suicide and depression you mention: I’m not gay, but I was seriously discouraged and saddened by your hateful remarks. You act like homosexuals are over-running the country, but the truth is that the prevailing attitude in this country is illogically-homophobic. With people like you across the country, how could homosexuals not be depressed, and even suicidal? And why would they choose to feel that way?
But let’s assume for a moment that you’re right, Sally, for the sake of argument. We will assume that homosexuality all by itself causes one to die younger, be less healthy and less happy. Let’s see, I bet we can think of some other things that meet these criteria… cigarettes and alcohol come to mind… fast food is another… commuting, that’s a good one… war definitely presents a health risk… pollution… the pharmaceutical industry… I could do this all day. Oh, and hateful, ignorant politicians make me want to off myself, too. So by your rationale, Sally, you ought to be railing against all of these other things just as much as (if not more than) homosexuality.
I thought that was all you were going to say, Sally, but then you kept going… “Matter of fact, studies show that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than, you know, a few decades.” What?! Read that sentence again. What societies are you talking about, Sally? Which “studies”? Wtf, Sally?
If that’s not enough, then you said that homosexuality is a greater threat to our nation than terrorism?! Sally, think about what you just said. Are you seriously telling me that a lesbian woman running a flower shop (for example) is more of a threat than a guy on a bus with a bomb? I know you don’t like gays, but what the hell are you thinking, Sally?
Then I was confused when you said that homosexuality is a greater threat than Islam, as though Islam in itself is a threat. Then you accused public school teachers of trying to “indoctrinate” children to accept gays from the age of two. Then you complained that gay people are “infiltrating” city councils, as though they shouldn’t be allowed to run for office. Then you compare homosexuality to cancer. Then it hit me. Sally Kern, you are nuts. And you need help.
I know what you’re thinking, Sally. For some reason, you think your religion instructs you to hate and hold back homosexuals. But you’re wrong. Yes, the Bible has a few passages in it that can be interpreted as condemning homosexuality. There are also parts that forbid women from teaching or having authority over men, so maybe you should just go ahead and resign, Sally. But here’s one aspect of your religion that is absolutely clear: Jesus Christ (you know, the guy the religion is named after) preached that we ought to love and be tolerant of everyone, regardless of his or her flaws. He preached about forgiveness and meekness. He told you not to judge others. He told you to treat others as you would like to be treated. And He never mentioned homosexuality. Don’t you see that you are fixated on homosexuals so much that you are undermining the most important part of your religion? You know, the whole Jesus thing?
One last point, Sally. I read the interview you gave with News Channel 9, and you seem to think that my and others’ criticism of you is unwarranted, since you are just exercising your “free speech rights.”
But Sally, no one ever said you weren’t within your rights when you gave your speech. You’re completely within your First Amendment rights-all we’re saying is that you’re mean, wrong and bigoted. There are plenty of people like you who are hateful, ignorant bullies but are still within their rights (that’s why the ACLU has represented the KKK in the past).
Thanks for your time, Sally. I hope you’ve learned something today.
