Let the historical record show that when this country faced a real, viable fascist threat from a despicable, racist, sexist, lying wannabe dictator in waiting, The Oklahoman, our state’s largest newspaper, declined to speak up for freedom.
Clinton: 80+ newspapers endorse
Libertarians: 6 newspapers endorse

The newspaper’s non-endorsement of a presidential candidate in the Nov. 8 election in a Sunday editorial, and its relentless and unfounded criticism of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, taken together represent a cowardly, immoral act that should shock and rattle any rational human being living here.
Traditionally conservative newspapers across the country—The Cincinnati Enquirer and The Arizona Republic, among many others—have come out for Clinton because their ownership and their staff know the risk the country and world faces if Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump becomes president, but The Oklahoman can only ask us to pray.
Here’s the gist of the newspaper’s non-endorsement of anyone for president this year:
Our advice: By all means vote on Nov. 8, then pray for this country.
That was the last line of a sexist, hateful editorial that essentially railed against Clinton but then between the lines indicated it wasn’t openly endorsing Trump either. The editorial first noted, “One nominee, Republican Donald Trump, is the wildest of wild cards” and that . . . “he’s prone to repeated crude and offensive behavior” but then it used its next seven paragraphs to beat up on Clinton on minor issues and ideology. It’s difficult not to see the extended Clinton criticism as an implicit endorsement of Trump.

The point of the meandering editorial—sometimes it’s difficult to discern “the point” of any given commentary in the right-wing, idiotic sewer sludge of The Oklahoman editorial page—was to argue that voters should, “. . . Vote to preserve Republican control of Congress, regardless of which presidential candidate wins.” Yet the logic doesn’t work. If Congress remains a Republican majority and Trump becomes president of a country with the largest military in the world, then the very real potential for world mayhem becomes manifest, and this it not an exaggeration.
Under the editorial’s own rhetorical binary, wouldn’t it be more logical to endorse Clinton and then also to endorse Republicans for Congress? Wouldn’t that create a balance the editorial seems to imply as a goal? But logic and The Oklahoman editorial page has always had a tentative relationship. The “crude and offensive” Trump gets a real pass here while the apparent sexist and racist editorial board at The Oklahoman pummels a woman on petty issues. The board members harass her verbally. They grab at her because they have power and money, and they can do so. They take what they think they’ve rightly and fairly earned.
The Oklahoman is owned by the absentee Philip Anschutz, a deplorable right-wing Colorado billionaire, but the local in-house staff are really responsible for this latest piece of fascist, right-wing drivel.
This is not a normal presidential election, and who knows if we’ll ever have a “normal” presidential election or “normal” political discourse ever again in this country, and that’s partially because of lying right-wing media outlets like The Oklahoman and the national Fox News. We’re facing a real fascist threat in this country from Trump and many of his supporters. Trump is an evil, lying dimwit, a racist, sexist scumbag, a lout. His extremist supporters want the evil, lying, racist, sexist scumbag to become president based on those very attributes.
Many Trump supporters are not voting for the lesser of the two evils. They’re voting for fascism and a dictatorship, and the vast majority of his supporters know it all too well. They’re deluded that somehow they’ll gain something tangible or just visceral under a right-wing dictatorship. I’ll concede that some of his supporters are just simply ideologues who don’t or never will have a historical perspective, but that’s about as easy as I can go on anyone voting for Trump, who lies because dictators and those who will be dictators always lie. Again, this is not a normal election.
It should be noted proudly as well that some smaller traditionally conservative newspapers in Oklahoma, such as The Duncan Banner, have endorsed Clinton for president as The Oklahoman sits on the sidelines to watch the potential fascist carnage unfold. This is how courage gets published in Duncan, Oklahoma, c. 2016:
It is impossible to champion our community’s shared ideals and accept Trump’s behavior. His video-recorded commentary about women was not mere locker room banter, as he would have us believe. It was not even objectification. He was, in fact, flaunting his ability to sexually assault women and get away with it – aggressions that he validated with his stardom.
The Oklahoman wants you to pray and then check out as if you don’t have any personal agency or any ability to act. I don’t care if you pray, but I do want you to vote for Hillary Clinton on Nov. 8 for president to secure democracy in this country. I especially call on Bernie Sanders’ supporters—I’m a big fan of Sanders and I hope he becomes part of a Clinton cabinet and continues to speak out—to join me in stopping fascism from destroying the world’s greatest hope and symbol of lasting freedom.
In my entire adult life as a voter, there has never been a clearer choice in an presidential election in this country.
As the Stillwater News Press puts it, “So, yes, we have misgivings about both candidates. Yet a sober look at their credentials and preparedness for the presidency, makes Clinton the only reasonable choice.”
Vote for Hillary Clinton on Nov. 8.
