Rep. Sally Kern is an unoriginal bigot, takes theme for hate speech from cheesy AFA movie

( – promoted by DocHoc)

This is an update regarding the ongoing controversy regarding Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern’s inflamatory anti-gay hate speech

I heard news that right-wing groups were organizing a pro-gay-hate rally in support of Rep. Sally Kern this week (more info here and here, so I started digging around a little bit online and guess what I found. . .

They're Coming to your Town

I know you probably think this is some kind of corny satirical creation, but no, it is the real bonafide thing. The AFA actually has made a film called “They’re Coming to your Town.” (it reminds me of some 50’s sci-fi movie like, “The Martians are coming”)

Also they have a trailer for the film that is online, which frankly is even more ridiculously corny than their movie cover graphic. You can click here to watch the trailer, it about 1 minute long

What is even more interesting to me is that Rep. Sally Kern referenced the supposed “gay takeover” of Eureka Springs in her notorious hate speech. Listen again to what Sally Kern said and then read this tidbit from the AFA website…

Residents of the small Arkansas town of Eureka Springs noticed the homosexual community was growing.  But they felt no threat.  They went about their business as usual.  Then, one day, they woke up to discover that their beloved Eureka Springs, a community which was known far and wide as a center for Christian entertainment–had changed.  The City Council had been taken over by a small group of homosexual activists.

The Eureka Springs they knew is gone.  It is now a national hub for homosexuals.  Eureka Springs is becoming the San Francisco of Arkansas. The story of how this happened is told in the new AFA DVD “They’re Coming To Your Town.”

So the mystery is solved. Rep. Kern is not only a bigot, but she is an unoriginal bigot who rips off her speech ideas almost verbatim from freaky cheesy scary movies.

NewsOK: Marine won’t draw penalty for flag fight

By Ann Kelley

Staff Writer

MIDWEST CITY – A U.S. Marine Corps reservist may have broken the law when he crossed a protest line to defend the U.S. flag, but he will not be punished for it, city officials said.

Midwest City Assistant City Attorney Randal Homburg said he thinks there are grounds to prosecute Ray Adam Modisette, 20, for an act of civil disobedience. At the request of the local police department, Homburg said he’s declining to file charges.

Modisette, of Shawnee, was arrested Friday afternoon on a complaint of interfering with official police process. He told The Oklahoman he was reacting to a war protester who was stuffing an American flag down her pants.

. . . June Parsons, 73, of Stillwater said the incident brought back bad memories of anti-military sentiment during the Vietnam War. Her husband was killed fighting in Vietnam, she said.

“If I was there I would have wanted to do the same thing and probably gotten the snot knocked out of me,” Parsons said. “I’m proud of that young man for standing up.”

Mike Chase, a reserve deputy with the Oklahoma County sheriff’s office, was among about 150 people who showed up Friday to demonstrate against the church group. Chase, who lost his son, Lance Michael Chase, in January 2006 in Iraq, said he could relate to both the emotions expressed by Modisette and the reaction of police. . . Marine Corps reservist won’t be charged in Midwest City flag rescue

MIDWEST CITY — A U.S. Marine Corps reservist won’t be charged for ignoring police requests and wading into a protest to rescue an American Flag.

I am used to crappy journalism with our local press, but this is beyond the pale.

Both stories do not provide the most basic of relevant facts in this case, that the protesters are not “anti-war protesters” but rather are the hategroup, Westboro Baptist Church (head by the  “Reverend” Fred Phelps) which publishes the website WBC protests the military, not because they are anti-war, but because they say that God hates America for its allegedly pro-gay policies.

By describing the WBC protesters as “anti-war” protesters, they are smearing the local and national movements to end the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Almost all true anti-war protesters in Oklahoma and in other places would find the actions of WBC to be reprehensible.

And I find it strange that the local press is completely silent about the intent of the WBC protesters. It seems like they are more bothered by an attack on the flag, than they are by the expression of hate against LGBT Americans.

I will be sending LTE’s to both The Oklahoman and The Tulsa World about this. I’ll let y’all know if they published.

Updated 12:30 p.m. Here’s a story from the Midwest City paper. It is slightly better (as it discusses the presence of the counter-protesters), but it still says that WBC’s protest was “anti-war” instead of discussing their anti-gay message.

Midwest City Sun: Marine arrested after attempt to retrieve flag

Also, as for the arrest and later decision to not prosecute Ray Modisette, I think both actions were pretty reasonable. The police really had no choice but to arrest him. The WBC hate group was engaged in constitutionally protected free speech and the police had to protect them. Their speech had a horrible message, but the best way to counter it is to engage in more free speech. I normally am not fan of the police, but they deserve credit here for keeping this situation from becoming violent.

I also think that the decision not to prosecute Modisette was appropriate. Since Modisette hadn’t actually engaged in an act of violence at that point, then there was no real harm done and I don’t think any benefit would come from prosecuting him. What he did was stupid, but understandable. The flag is very important symbol for many people and I can understand why he responded the way he did.

Rep. Sally Kern's ugly anti-gay speech is made public on the internet

Updated at 4:17 p.m., March 7, 2008 Audio recording from speech by Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern

Here are a few quotes from Rep. Kern’s hateful speech…

Studies show, no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted for more than, you know, a few decades. . .

I honestly think it’s the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam. . .

They want to get them into the government schools so they can indoctrinate them . . .  They are going after our young children, as young as two years of age, to try to teach them that the homosexual lifestyle is an acceptable lifestyle.

You know, Gays are infiltrating city councils. . . Did you know that the city council of Eureka Springs is now controlled by gays? . .

. They are winning elections.

We have the gay-straight alliance coming into our schools. . .

One of my colleagues said We don’t have a gay problem in our community… well you know what, that is so dumb. If you have cancer  in your little toe, do you just say that I’m going to forget about it since the rest of you is fine? It spreads! This stuff is deadly and it is spreading. It will destroy our young people and it will destroy this nation.

This is why it is critical that folks speak out against gay hate speech. Sure Rep. Sally Kern has the right to be hateful and to say hateful things (as long as she doesn’t threaten people), but she doesn’t have the right to stay in the legislature. The people have got to speak up and vote her out of office, or better yet the legislature should impeach her and remove her from office. I see this as being no different than a state legislator coming out of the closet as a rabid racist and supporter of the KKK.

It must be made clear that it is wrong to refer to people made in the Image of God, as being a “cancer”, as being “worse than the terrorists or Islam” (and let’s not attack Muslim people either, but I guess Rep. Kern is a bigot in more than one way). This kind of speech is SICK AND WRONG.

I would encourage folks to call Ms. Kern and let her know that hate is not an Oklahoma value (and for that matter isn’t a Christian value either).

Her contact info (taken from the OK state house website) is:

(405) 557-7348

2713 Sterling Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73127

Updated at 4:17 p.m.: Oh boy, I forgot that Sally Kern was the same person who also wanted to mandate the creation of a “State Library Material Content Advisory Board” that would keep pro-gay books out of the hands of children. (thanks to for this link

Don’t worry though. According to the Dustbury story from 2006, Kern insists that “I’m not a Nazi. I believe in free speech. But for every right we have, there is a responsibility.”

Yeah right. I think Hitler would have loved her anti-gay speech. He loved to scapegoat folks too.

Oklahoma Minuteman group posts hate signs in OKC minority neighborhood

( – promoted by DocHoc)

I’m more than a bit upset by these signs that were posted in my very diverse, inter-racial neighborhood (Lincoln Terrace).

These signs were posted on both sides of Lincoln Blvd every few block or two (normally at the bus stops), presumably as a racist scare tactic to let hispanics know that they are not welcome.

I’ve called the racist Oklahoma Minuteman Organization two times (their phone # is (405) 308-4085) and have asked them to respond to why they posted these signs (or if they claim to have not posted them) but have not heard back from them yet.

I’m encouraging local residents to tear down these signs (which are illegally posted on sign posts) and also to let your state legislators know that legislation like HB 1804 is unfortunately giving the paranoid anti-immigrant group a practical endorsement to pursue their hate agenda.

Hate Crimes strike Ada, OK

( – promoted by DocHoc)

Two hate crimes have apparently occured in the Ada, Oklahoma area recently.

In one case, a woman was held to the ground by two men who carved the word “LESBIAN” into her arm with a razer blade or a box knife.

In another case, a woman was hit in the head, had her shirt removed, and then tied to a tree with the cut-up shirt, with the word “hell-bound” written on her stomach.

More information on these events, and the work of the Gay-Straight Alliance at East Central University to counter these attacks can be read on my blog at:…

Green Party candidate gets 5% of vote in Northeast OKC, beats Republican in home precinct

Here?s the results from the the Oklahoma State Elections Board:

  WILLARD LINZY  REP 1,166 18.34%
  J. M. BRANUM  IND 306 4.81%

Also I called the Oklahoma County Elections board and for my home precinct, the results were?

  Pittman (D) – 105 or 89%
  Branum (I/G) – 8 or 6.8%
  Linzy (R) – 5 or 4.2%
  (118 total votes cast)

I am quite pleased with these results.

Certainly would have loved to have done better, but given the limited time and money I had to work with, I?m glad so many folks voted for me. I?m also really tickled to see the good results in my home precinct as that is an area that did a fair bit of campaigning in (i.e. getting literature out to voters, putting up signs, etc.).

As for my future political plans, I plan to support our new state representative, Anastasia Pittman in working for the betterment of this district and in protecting our basic civil and human rights (particularly in ending the death penalty). If she fights for the good in the way that Rep. Opio Toure did, then she can count one me being a stronger supporter in the future.

If on the other hand, she does not stand up for what is right and good, then I will seriously consider either recruiting someone to run against her or running myself.

Time of course will tell what will happen, but I of course am hoping that she meets the test.

I also want to say thank you to all who supported me in this, especially to my friends Huti and Jean (who came out from Muskogee several times to help me campaign), Randy (who faithfully came to many of my public appearances), to the Green Party (for their financial support and encouragement), to Lance & Ashley (for hosting my watch party), to my friend Kimberly (for encouraging me to do the campaign when it still seemed like a crazy idea), to local bloggers and press for telling folks about my campaign, and most of all to my dear friend Rachel who was my trusted campaign advisor and showed me so much encouragement and support through this campaign.

Henry = Hiett = Oklahoma is screwed

( – promoted by DocHoc)

This mighty scary except from a post on makes a good argument why Henry is conservative in democratic clothing. (I only wish we had a progressive choice this fall. Henry is a joke.)

Have you heard the governor’s latest commercial? If you close your eyes, you might confuse it for one by Lt. Governor candidate Todd Hiett, and for good reason. In many ways, Hiett and Henry are running the same campaign. Each one brags about their accomplishments with the state budget:

  * Cutting taxes
  * Improving health care
  * Increasing funding for education
  * Better funding for roads and bridges
  * Making the state more business friendly
  * Fiscal responsibility
